Empowering the Next Generation: The Journey of Black Girls Code

The Genesis of a Movement

Founded in 2011 by Kimberly Bryant, an electrical engineer who felt the sting of isolation in her tech career due to her race and gender, Black Girls Code was born out of a necessity. Bryant saw the challenges her daughter faced, similar to what she had endured years prior, and recognized the urgent need for a supportive community where young Black girls could learn about computer programming and digital technology in a nurturing environment. 

What is Black Girls Code?

Black Girls Code is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to teaching girls aged 7 to 17 about computer programming and digital technology. The goal is to provide African American youth with the skills to occupy some of the 1.4 million computing job openings expected to be available in the U.S. by 2020, and to train 1 million girls by 2040. The organization has set up workshops and after-school programs in major cities across the U.S. and even in Johannesburg, South Africa.
